"Touring That City" is a beloved Southern Gospel song written by Harold Lane. It has been recorded by numerous gospel artists and remains a favorite among fans of traditional quartet-style gospel music. The song is about the joy and anticipation of heaven, describing the beauty and splendor of the eternal home that awaits believers. It paints a vivid picture of walking the streets of gold, seeing Jesus face to face, and experiencing a place free from pain and sorrow. The lyrics emphasize the Christian hope of eternal life and the excitement of finally reaching heaven.
"Touring That City" continues to be a favorite song at gospel concerts and church services, especially in the Southern Gospel and traditional quartet communities. Its uplifting message and joyful melody make it a song of hope and anticipation for believers looking forward to their heavenly home.
In 1964, Martin Cook, who was previously a piano player for the Kingsmen and a chemistry teacher at Swain High School in Bryson City, NC, founded The Inspirations with a group of his teenage students. They became really popular during the 1970s because of their incredible sound and talent, not to mention their popular appearance on the Gospel Singing Jubilee TV show. Fifty years later the Inspirations are still going strong and are better than ever!
Harold Lane (1929–2002) was a Southern Gospel songwriter, singer, and arranger known for his contributions to gospel music, particularly through his work with the Speer Family and as a founding member of the Gethsemane Quartet. He is best remembered for writing the beloved gospel song "Touring That City." He was known for his smooth harmonies, powerful lyrics, and creative arrangements, which helped shape the quartet-style gospel sound that remains popular today.
"2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." -Revelation 21:2
Chorus:
Some morning you'll find me touring that city
Where the son of God is the light
You'll find me there on the streets, so pretty
Made of gold so pure and so bright
With Jesus, the one who gave me the victory
Who led me across the divide
Some morning you'll find me touring that city
Where with Him, I will ever abide
Verse 1:
Many times I have wondered 'bout the sights of that city
And all that my eyes shall behold
I will see all the wonders when I enter that city
There forever be safe in His fold
Verse 2:
Here on earth we have troubles that to us seem so heavy
But in Heaven no one will be sad
Mom and Dad will be singing, Heaven's praises will be ringing
For the dearest Friend I ever had
