Description

“Canto de Ossanha” is the opening song of Baden Powell’s opus magnum “Os Afro-Sambas de Baden e Vinicius”. The album was recorded in 1966 and it sealed his “parceria” (partnership in Brazilian) with celebrated poet Vinicius de Moraes (a great deal of popular Brazilian music is founded on such collaborations, which usually span over many years). It is a tribute to the Afro-Brazilian culture, but also to the Candomble religion and the rituals attached to it. Ossanha is an “Orixa” a deity represented in various polytheistic religions imported in Brazil by enslaved Africans; this song is dedicated to him. According to the legend, Baden and Vinicius composed all eight songs included in the album in merely three weeks’ time; recording it took only three days.
