Description
Beverly Sills was my first diva and the reason I became infatuated with coloratura sopranos and started collecting vocal music. Sills holds a special place in my musical life to this day so I'm happy to share this rare item that is not currently posted on YouTube: Sills in performance with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, at Philharmonic Hall in New York City in 1972.
THE MUSIC: Known for her leading roles in opera, it was only in 1969 that Sills begin programming art song and chamber music repertoire consistently. Here she is singing the charming French salon bon-bon "Le bonheur est chose légère" written by Camille Saint-Saëns in 1864, arranged very effectively for accompaniment by violin and piano. This delicate song does not require a fusillade of coloratura trickery (few art songs ask for for the vocal demands of opera or concert arias), but it’s an ideal match for a light soprano with a demure touch.
