一剪梅 means a branch of plum blossom. In ancient times, when people were separated at two different places, they may express their longing by exchanging with each other a branch of plum blossom. This may also be referred to as 一枝花 or 一枝春. For example Lu Kai's poem, “江南无所有，聊赠一枝春” which literally translates to "Jiangnan has nothing, let's chat about a sprig of spring".
